[Someone sounds groggy. And grouchy.] Have there been any fucking medical breakthroughs on unexpected comas yet?

[A beat] What the fuck happened this time?

I've got something. [He even nods toward his desk, because in the top drawer is where the most basic of notes are. He has other ones in various little places around his room.] Fucking barge.

[He shakes his head, though, and switches topics.] What happened with Hayley?

Hm? [Oh goddammit.] I just brought up some concerns I had with her warden. I think he's trying to get her in with a better crowd and I think one of the things she does is knife people right off the bat. Like she's testing to see if they'll take her abuse. I don't really know the point of it, but I figure it's not helping her make any decent friends.

[Snort. That gets a vague smile.] She's a kid. Kids do stupid things. What crowd is he aiming for?

Not Rex and not Crane and not Dawsey. Actually I don't think Dawsey's all that bad, but you get the idea. [He shrugs. It seemed to him writing her off "as a kid" was underrating her intelligence.]

He beat someone to death in the bathroom, [he said dryly. He's also in the big dumb brute category, as far as Cooper's concerned.]

He having any luck?

I think he's a scared dumb kid that doesn't know how to handle these people. [He was a prime example of why they made people forget.] But I don't think he would hatch a massive plan to distribute behavior altering manipulative media.

[He shrugs.] I think you're the best luck he's had so far.

[Cooper lifted his eyes ceiling-ward, shaking his head.] I'm the best of the worst, that's good to know.

You know what I mean. [He pulls out his pack of cigarettes and doesn't try to open it. Just packs it against his hand.] Anyway, she'll forget about it eventually. [In other words, he wanted to keep his personal stuff his.]

[Cooper grunts, eyes the pack for a moment, then holds out his hand. He's a sometimes smoker, and it feels like a why not situation.] It'll be a long eventually.

I'm a pretty forgettable guy. So hopefully not too long. [He hands off the pack and fishes in his pocket for his lighter.] She asked me once if you'd done anything bad to your kids. [Seemed like an odd question to ask] I believe my exact words were, "Hell, no." Or something to that effect.

[That's a little...jarring. He frowns, and crosses his arms.] How much do you know about her?

Not much. I don't ask Capa anything that would infringe on her privacy. I have a few guesses, but even if I was right he's better equipped to tend to them.

Maybe. [He doesn't put stalk in a warden just because they're a warden. Jury's still out on Capa.] What are your guesses?

The concern makes me think some sort of abuse. The fact she was able to kill Franklin so easily and she treats people like she does makes me think that she has some [familiar] lack of guilt issues and she hasn't set a groundwork of rules for her behavior yet. She probably likes being friends with people worse than her because it makes her feel better about herself.

[Which isn't all that far from the few guesses Cooper has made. There's a little crease between his brows. It's his thinking face.]

She's pretty pissed at those friends right now.
