It's quite simple really. Nobody gave him a sword. For some reason, it turned up with him. For some reason, it needed locking up in a magical box. Which implies magical sword which shouldn't be picked up, yes?

Well, someone thought it'd be a good idea to open that box, because of the magic in the sword... something to do with helping Arthas. Except that bit wasn't done.

So you're left with Arthas and a magical sword ripe for the stealing.

I wish I could take you seriously after 'magical sword' came up. Go ahead and blame my headache.
